Impairment Ratings

In attempting to utilize the American Medical Associations (AMA) "Guides for the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, 5th edition" ratings to determine the whole person impairment for the 22 body injury categories listed in the PDRS schedule, it would appear that one would need to have a PhD. in the subject, as well as be board certified in a variety of specialties ranging from acupuncture to orthopedics to urology. While medical providers only need to be familiar with the chapters related to their specialty, the attorney or adjuster must know the whole book to ensure accurate ratings are provided.

For an individual who is not readily familiar with the AMA "Guides", attempting to adjust all the factors into a single rating can cause gross confusion and extreme anxiety. Dr. Hector's lecture on the AMA "Guides" for the spine alone lasts several hours. To learn the AMA "Guides" book could require a complete college course. Additionally, understanding the GAF score for mental illness and converting it to whole person impairment in conjunction with the "Guides" could almost make one mentally ill.

The physicians at PMG have been calculating impairment ratings for more than 10 years. We receive evaluations from many other states where the "Guides" have been used for decades. Our professionals can assist you in making certain that the rating being given is accurate and correct.

Under 4064 (d) we can make certain that you are not paying tens of thousands of dollars to claimants for disability to which they are not entitled. Several forms of rating assessment are available:

  • PMG physicians can review the P & S report and critique a rating for accuracy.
  • PMG physicians can perform a permanent partial disability (PPD) evaluation, especially on claimants treated by an MPN where the physician has no real knowledge of how to use the "Guides".
  • PMG physicians can review the complete records and determine if not only the diagnosis is accurate but also if "Guides" consistency criteria are met.
